Re: Working out the harmony (chords) for a piece of music.

Hi Sorry - I assumed you could read music. I've found a version with chord symbols. If you let me have your e-mail address I'll send it to you. Be aware that it's a photograph of the page - just discovered my new (cheap) all-in-one \printer doesn't have a scan function! The music is on Eb, but there...

Re: Working out the harmony (chords) for a piece of music.

Hi http://www.hymntime.com/tch/pdf/en/m/o/n/k/MonksGate.pdf Clicking the above gives what I assume is Vaughan Williams original arrangement of what is in essence an English folk song. I would probably simplify it a bit! The PDF should show below. If not, 'refresh' the page (maybe a couple of times)....

Re: Movie Theatres and Organs

Hi I enjoy playing theatre organs when I get the chance, although primarily I'm a church organist. The first time I played a theatre organ in public was a little fraught, however. The school where 3 of my children attended had installed an organ from a bomb-damaged cinema in the early 1950's. The co...

Re: Even more organ music for Lent!

Thanks JohnT.

Thankfully the UTI i had a couple of weeks ago has settled - it really knocked me for 6. On top of that, I had a Gout flare up - hopefully, that's on its way out. Finished the tablets yesterday, but still some symptoms.

Every Blessing

Even more organ music for Lent!

Hi Firstly, I wish all board members a very happy and Blessed Easter. If you follow me on Facebook, you will have seen that I've not been too well the past couple of weeks, so here's 2 weeks worth of my voluntaries for Lent (plus one that's not specific to the season!) First up is a simple sounding ...

Re: What do these messages mean on my Yamaha Surround Sound

Hi Looks like 2 different issues. "Straight" is a setting on the receiver that bypasses the tone controls & so on. It's intended to give an accurate playback of whatever is coming into the machine from the source (DVD, CD, Radio or whatever) There will either be a button or a menu item...

More organ music for Lent

Hi Two more recordings from church. First up is a setting of the chorale "Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir" (Out of the depths I cry, Lord, to Thee). This is attributed to Christian Geist (c.1640 - 1711) fgWYPXbyOK0 This was my opening voluntary at Wolston Baptist Church last Sunday (Lent ...

Re: Playing the Harmonica

Hi I'm no expert, but it seems to me that there are two types of Harmonica. Hugh in the original post mentions a "Chromatic Harmonica". Dad used to have one (I wonder what happened to it!) which I used to try & play sometimes when I was much younger. Then there's the (probably) more co...

A Bach Chorale Prelude for Lent

Hi Another recording from church. I'm trying to play an appropriate piece for Lent each Sunday - this is last week's effort. The German Chorale that Bach uses as a basis is about Jesus' sufferings on the cross (and strictly, it's a Passiontide chorale, so I've played it a couple of weeks too early!)...

Organ Music for Lent

Hi Recordings of 2 of my voluntaries at church last Sunday (First Sunday of Lent). Enjoy. First up is a prelude on "Forty Days and Forty Nights" by C.S. Lang - best known among organists for his "Tuba Tune". Kh33vSyw1-k Then this short Chorale Prelude by Johannes Brahms, one of h...

Re: Londonderry Air

Hi Hugh Thanks for your comments. I started piano lessons when I was around 6 or 7, and added church organ lessons for a few years in my early teens, so I was taught organ "properly", and the techniques are useful on more basic instruments too. I had a legacy that enabled me to buy the Vis...

Anyway, I know I've posted this before, but hopefully you will enjoy Noel Rawsthorne's prelude on the Londerry Air, played by me on my Viscount Envoy 35 digital organ. 1DpprfYhhW4 Enjoy...

Re: Wave or Mp3 [That is the question]

Hi The simple answer is that yes, there is a difference. MP3 uses a compressed format in which the algorithm "throws away" any sounds that it thinks the average human ear can't hear. Fair enough, The trouble is the process isn't perfect, sometimes the results can be heard (and are more obv...

Re: Improvisation. I wish I could improvise like this guy!.

Hi It is possible to learn how to improvise, indeed, it's part of the "stock in trade" of many classical organists, mainly in Europe. I've attended a couple of classes on improvisation arranged by local Organists' Associations, and I sometimes will try something simple at church, but I pro...

Re: A Harmonium at Christmas

Thanks Hugh It is a little unusual not to have pedals, although one small pipe organ I played over Christmas didn't have pedals either. On the Harmonium, your feet are busy enough providing the wind (although with properly restored bellows it's not hard hard work), but also adjusting the use of thos...

Sussex Carol, Daquin Noel, In the Bleak Midwinter

Hi Back in 2006 I produced a CD of Christmas instrumentals, some improvised meditations on carols using piano & synthesiser, some short classical pieces played on the chamber organ in my last church, and a couple of other tracks. I thought I'd share some of the tracks. I have a small quantity of...
