Re: Tuning a keyboard instrument.

Deliberate detuning that's fixed, as found in the AR100, is something I'm personally not really keen on. Yes, in theory it should add to the ensemble effect, but it's not the same effect as the multiple, constantly varying pitch differences in a natural ensemble. What I find is that it often creates...

Re: Wersi Scala GS700

Hugh's asked me to comment on the Scala. I'm afraid that I can't really help that much. I've not played one of the more recent models, but those Wersis I have played, I have found pretty awkward to get around. That was in the days before the humongous touch screens they now have, and I'm sure that m...

Re: Windows 10 and recording with Audacity - a BIG PROBLEM!

I have been reading these posts with interest. One question arises for me; I'm wondering if, when I am playing a song accompanied by a style on my PSR970 and I am listening to myself via my stereo head phones, will I be hearing myself in stereo or mono? PS. I have an adapter on the end of my head p...

Re: Windows 10 and recording with Audacity - a BIG PROBLEM!

Locate and find, then install the correct and most up to date drivers for the Behringer interface, as W10 hasn't 'found it' and is using a generic CODEC. It might be that the Behringer is a bit old and that it won't work with W10 - I have a couple of interfaces that 'stop' at W7, which is the main r...

Re: Improvisation. I wish I could improvise like this guy!

Once you've got the idea of how to improvise over the basic sequences, transfer that skill over to the chord sequence in the part of the tune in which you want to improvise. Get the chords onto 'autopilot', you don't want to be thinking too much about them or looking down at them while you're trying...

Re: Improvisation. I wish I could improvise like this guy!

Improvisation need not be as frightening as it sounds. The advice already given is sound, but don't get too worried about talk of harmony notes, passing notes etc. Important, yes, but you can let yourself into the world of improvisation easily. It's an important part of playing, IMHO, and it can for...

Re: An Experiment on the Korg Pa700

They sound the same to me too. EQ is something that can be effectively used, but is often abused! If you need to use substantial amounts of EQ, there's often something amiss. EQ can compensate for poor acoustics in a room, or poor amp/speaker combinations. If the latter, the ultimate solution is to ...

Re: New Yamaha EL Organ (ELB-02)

It was surprising that the ability to rebalance or mute style parts was not part of the AT90 series from start to finish with the SL. In fact, I think it was only at the end of the 900/800 series, when the Platinum was released, that the function was included. It obviously wasn't on their list of pr...

Re: Your Favourite Keyboard / Organ Rig ?

Nowadays we have organs and keyboards that are 'one stop shops' but when I started back in 1970, you had different instruments for different sounds. Here's the 1974 set-up for a BBC recording session at home (I didn't usually wear the velvet suit, that was just for the photo). Hammond T500 organ and...

Re: Bagpipes

Les, You don't mention what instrument you have, so here are my 'standing orders' for higher end Yamaha keyboards. In Left Voice , use Bagpipes, set Octave to +1. In Mixing Console, add some more reverb than default and then add some chorus, around 40 -50 should do. Set the L+Style split point to Bb...

Re: Double / Triple Tonguing

Two ways of doing the 'classical' way of this technique. 3 2 1 (thumb), or 4 3 2, as described. If you're fast enough, you might try 3 2 3 2, 3 1 3 1 or 2 1 2 1. I think I've used all of these variants at some point, probably fitting the required one in to match the fingering that's needed before an...

Re: Left hand chords

I'm with Hugh on this one. Look at the melody at the point where the chord is, and just before and afterwards. Chances are that the Eb, which is the b9, will be in the melody. What chord you should actually play at that point depends on what instrument you're playing. Organ: D bass on the pedals, F#...

Re: Pianos

Worth remembering that not all sustain pedals are created equal. Some are indeed on/off switches, but some are graduated pedals. If the piano it's plugged into supports it, then the pianist will be able to use half-pedal techniques. It has to be said that most pianists probably never master this, an...

Re: What and how are Multipads used?

That's only a tiny part of it. There are several different uses for Multipads 1-extra percussion sounds, you might add bongos and congas to a rhythm. These loop and play along with the rhythm. 2-extra rhythmic instruments, primarily guitars, but you'll also find brass figures and those arpeggios you...

It's easy enough to do, in fact there's yet another way to get to that screen. Press any of the up/down balance buttons on the organ and you get the main balance screen. Press the > arrow icon and you get to the part balance screen. The screenshot is 'startup' before any style was selected, I assume...

OK, now recovered fully! Now I must admit that I don't use the auto accompaniment that much on the Atelier organs, preferring to use just drums, but there are times when it's handy. Re: Ensuring you play instruments in their appropriate range

You might want to rethink the range for the trumpet - as shown, it's below the Tuba! :D It should start on the Eb below Middle C and go up to the Bb almost two octaves above Middle C.# And can I ask you to correct the typo that says that the Key of Eb has four flats! It has three, of course! Worth r...

As anyone who went to my concerts from the 70s onwards may remember, I used to avoid microphones if it was possible and, like the actors, I projected my voice. Re: What is the 'Direct Access' button for on Yamaha Tyros

Brilliant button! Press it, then press another button and you go straight to that page in the menu system. If you press it with ACMP, up comes a screen offering split points, fingering modes etc. Press it and press a footswitch or pedal and you get all the options for that pedal.

Re: Are your notes played on a Vibraphone or Piano in Stereo

Depends on how the sounds are sampled and on how the manufacturer wants to use them. On a digital piano or on a good keyboard, the piano pans from left to right as you go from bass to treble, just as it should - IF you were sitting at it. Electric pianos will do the same, of course. They use stereo ...

Re: Pitch within keyboards ...

To answer your query, albeit belatedly. No, keyboards like the bigger Yamahas have their sections perfectly in tune, but you can detune the right hand and left hand voices as you wish. IIRC the style voices are fixed in tune, but I'd have to check the mixer screen to be 100% sure on that. Deliberate...

A bit late, and I haven't watched the video but here's the way I get people to do it, this example assumes that we're in 4/4 time. Re: Registrations

It depends entirely on the tune, of course. I have a couple of pieces on the desk now that only need two, alternating between them at two points. I made a few suggestions for modifications to the X666, one of which was to add in the excellent string ensemble phasing board from the E550. This would allow the upper and lower orchestral voices to be routed through the ensemble effect, giving strings for example on the lower that could be mixed w...

Earlier Casios had four positions for each drawbar, Off, Soft, Medium and Full. That would explain any jumpiness in the sounds. That hadn't changed by the last time I reviewed a Casio, the CTK7000.
