“Community Keyboards” Oldham Community Radio 99.7FM

I have had the following from Ian Wolstenholme who says: Dear Hugh and Brian As you may know I produce/present “Community Keyboards”, Oldham Community Radio 99.7FM. I wonder if I might be able to include the winning entry to the August (and future) challenge in one of my forthcoming editions of the ...

Re: A PORTRAITE OF MY LOVE

Hi Roy, Those 187 views I suspect are mostly 'visitors' to the Forum, who cannot make comments unless they join. I think most people who actively post things are with Facebook Groups. I personally don't like Facebook as it is a 'running time-line' and you can't put things up in folders in a logical ...

Re: Take Good Care Of My Baby.

Hi George, You really are a dab hand at playing these 'oldies'. Love to listen to them as this was the music I listened to as a teenager. Perhaps we should call them 'not that old oldies'. VAL7JEAN and DonW are the people who play the 'really old oldies' dating back to the 1930s. Below is Bobby Vee ...

Re: All Of Me

Hi Val,

A good bass to that one.

One of the original singers of this song was Billie Holiday (1915-1959), an American Jazz singer.

Re: Tie-A-Yellow-Ribbon.

Hi Jon,

This song has always been one of my favourites. Such a romantic story line. Brought tears to my eyes first time I heard it sung!

Played in your usual 'bouncy' style. A real pleasure to listen to.

Re: WITH/WITHOUT A LESLIE

Mike, That Leslie Speaker Demo Record - Side 2 video is brilliant!. What a gem! I always associate Moonlight Serenade with a 'Glen Miller' sound and am always disappointed when I play this on my AR as I cannot get anywhere near this sound (keyboards do a far better job). Hearing this has given me in...

Re: Du, Du, Leigst im mein Hertzen

Hi Ken,

You can tell you're an 'organist' as you have played this superbly with both hands and feet. Organ pieces are always interesting when played like this, with the 'rhythm' created by the player as you can slow down and speed up as the mood takes you.

Re: Pianos

Here is a recording I have done on my AR using the 'piano' voice. I'm very happy with how this sounds, but I am just playing single notes, so can hold a note down and let it fade away naturally, or lift my finger off the note which stops it sounding immediately, as in a real piano. Another effect I ...

Re: Pianos

Brian, There wasn't a lot of difference in the sound of those pianos and I would be happy with any of them. But to me, the most important part of playing a piano is having a 'loud' pedal, as I used to call it. From Wikipedia: A sustain pedal or sustaining pedal (also called damper pedal, loud pedal,...

Re: Clavelitos

Hi Brian, I always think it's a good idea to record with a 'low' signal anyway. Once you have gone beyond the 'clip' point there is nothing you can do about it. The only thing that crops up when the recording is too quiet is that when you play it back you have to turn the volume up. It would be a pa...

Re: Me and my Shadow

Hi Ken, I can usually tell just by listening to a recording as to whether it's in Mono or Stereo. A Mono recording hasn't the 'fullness' that you would get in a Stereo recording. But to answer your question about how to tell in Audacity, look at the movement of the left and right channels of the 'sp...

Re: Me and my Shadow

Hi Ken,

I liked your use of the M.O.C./Technicord feature as this helps to make a really 'full' sound. Your 'waveform' of this is below, which is perfect for recording level (on both channels) .. but it is in MONO.

Re: Clavelitos

Hi Ken, Below is the waveform of your recording. You can see the volume level of the right channel where the marker is in the picture, and it i...

Re: Sunny Afternoon - The Kinks - in Classic Beguine Style

Hi Brian, You've got that harmonica with the slow vibrato again. A great sound. Another thing I really liked about this piece is that when you have the harmonica playing you have some 'strings' as 'straight chords' to accompany it. That is a combination I really like as you get the harmony of the pi...
