Hugh and Brian,
I think it is some kind of tarantula. They eat crickets and locusts.
My son says it won't need feeding for about another four months.
He used to keep snakes and they ate mice.
You buy them frozen which he used to call "mice-icles"

I looked after my daughters 2 rats and 4 cats last summer. Unfortunately the rats have since died. Nothing to do with me or the cats. I'm sorry but if she wants spiders, she takes them on holiday with her.
