Ticket Prices

Postby Westgarth » 09 Feb 2018 20:43

Hi folks

Just having a rant.

Saw YES last year, brilliant act, ticket was about £36.

Saw Lindisfarne at Christmas, amazing act, ticket was about £24.

On top of this Parking, £9 and a couple of drinks £10.

Quite fancied going to see Joe Bonamassa at the SAGE in Gateshead. For those who don't know Joe, he's one of the best blues guitarists in the world.

Ticket price. £74.

No wonder people pirate songs.

Just saying.

Steve,

They were having a discussion about this on the Victoria program on the BBC a couple of days ago, and they had a couple of gig promoters on the program. The way the program started, you are not the only person who has had a moan about the prices they charge.

What they were discussing was how the artistes who compose, play and record their music actually earn a living. It would appear that very few CDs are sold these days and they earn very little from 'on line' sales. I know that my granddaughters who are aged 14 and 16 don't have a CD payer, and our son and daughter-in-law don't have one either .. and neither does our daughter .. and they listen to music all the time!

Most people these days are 'streaming' their music and pirating their songs. So they can no longer sit back and rely on record sales. The only way they can earn a living is to get out there and play 'live' to the pubic. So as this is their main source of income they charge what they think they can get. If the venues were half empty at these prices then maybe they would charge less. It's a case of supply and demand.

By the end of the program one was almost feeling sorry for them!

Hi Steve,

To be honest I tend now to wait for the videos as you can see and hear more than at a live concert, not the same atmosphere I know ?
As someone that gigged in a band in the late 1960s it was hard work for what you got especially working mens clubs , but it was your bread and butter. In the beginning we did not have an agent and got work by word of mouth, then we went with an agent but you could play 7 nights a week and after taking the agents cut off it was the same as you would get for doing just 5 nights of your own work, that in my opinion was the start of agents fees,

Once, you just listened to a band playing, but as the venues got bigger along came the big screens , live video feeds and all the rest , and someone has to pay for it all and its usually the tickets sales that pays for it all, like going to the cinema its the sweets , food sales that make it expensive now

Funny, but Ken(H) has brought up this very point about CDs and 'streaming' in his post here:

I don't mind paying premium prices if I'm going to be entertained but in this concert he's brought along a few guests who I've never heard of but I'm expected to pay for them.

I never minded paying a cover charge at a club Brian as the consensus was, if there's a cover charge they're generally good. You never saw the roadie loading a 4 x 4 cabinet on to a private jet, it was always an old bus or transit. The big boys are just taking the pee.

Hi Steve,

I saw Mike and The Mechanics at the City Hall, can't remember when but the original singer was still alive and it was only £24 a ticket ,

The drummers dad had a Transit as he was a joiner and we used to use that, no roadies just us humping all the gear.
Its was always a good night in a Working Men`s Club, you Knew you would get payed and could have a cheap pint too.
We used to do a Working Men`s Club on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays and after we finished we loaded the gear and went and played in the night clubs till 2 am you where Knackered by Monday morning for work, but it was all good fun and we enjoyed it while it lasted

Hi Brian

I bet you could tell some tales about the club scene.

When we had the shop they all came in on Saturday's needing new tapes for the Echo or even a new echo unit, new microphones (pinched by the concert chairman), new speaker cabinet (but can we pay over the next 6 weeks), know any bass players, we've lost ours. They left the club and the bass player had disappeared, we all knew where.

There were some great characters.

Hi Steve Not into ticket prices. Sent you a private email yesterday. Had ride to Seaburn today travelled passed the now demolished club but could not see Taylors. I turned left to Aldi. I wonder if I went straight on it would be on that stretch of road. Very brisk walk from Morrisons to Roker and back. John

Hi John

The shop was further up. The bus route turns left at what was the Sun Inn on the little roundabout onto Thompson Road. The shop was over the roundabout about a hundred yards up on the right. I'll have another look next time I'm up there. Got your message John.

Hi Brian

I've mentioned it a couple of times before. The family had a second hand shop which specialised in used musical instruments as well as embassy coupons, green shield stamps, wardrobes and anything that would sell. Did second hand clothes long before Barnardos. This was from 1970 to about 1981. It was known as Kelco's in Whitehall Terrace (Hylton Road) next to the cemetery. My cousin Kevin ran it and it was a well known haunt for those who couldn't afford the prices in Whites of Sunderland.

My brother and I would demo guitars on a Saturday afternoon and test all the gear the artistes brought in. More like con artistes some of them. The term "It worked alright last night" was often heard. I always ran amplifiers for at least 10 minutes before plugging a microphone in, you could smell the transformers burning. At the time one of the best sellers were guitar cases with the letters on "John Miles Set" everyone wanted one. We even had a lad who could make his own Gibsons and Fenders. We often had to chase him.

Dad would bring various Eko, Vox and Wurlitzer pianos home "to test" for the weekend.

Great times.

Hi Steve,

Hylton Road, remember the area well, can't say for certain I was in your shop or not but it's more than likely I will have been

Yes the Watkins Echo Chambers and its tapes remember them well, Selmar amplifiers, I once had a Bird amplifier before moving onto a VOX AC30

Heady Days,

Hi Brian

You're the only other person I've known who had a Bird amp. I had the 30 watt with built in real reverb. It had a hell of a mains hum but was fine for the wash house. Paid £30 quid for it. I saw it in an old Bells catalogue a few weeks ago.

Sold many an AC30, tops and combos. Can even remember a couple of AC50's, couldn't get rid of those. We had an old Selmer 100 pa I kept for test purposes. The cleanest amp I've ever known.

Used to do a roaring trade in Horns. They were empty but groups thought they looked good on stage and gave the impression they had big sound system.

Happy days.

Steve

Hi Steve,

I don't know if Selmar is still in existence, but they were a good bit of kit, we had a Selmar P.A. system, and a Shure microphones
which were great for helping to reduce feedback, brings back good memories
