Playing by ear

Hi everyone,

Just a thought but when I said I played a piece by ear I suppose I was technical wrong I think
what I actually did was played from memory as I didn't have the sheet music in front of me `

I picked the notes out of a recording of the song and by matching them to the melody line and
remembering them I played it without the music ? so is that playing by ear ? or from memory

Strictly speaking, you could define playing by ear as being able to play the piece without having ever looked at the music, whereas playing from memory is playing the piece having learnt it from the music and then memorising it. But, as has been said, if you play it by ear you do have to remember it too! :D
