Organ names

Postby andyg » 04 Oct 2016 20:27

Hi all - but probably mainly Mike for this one! :)

Over on Lowrey forum we were talking about Lowrey borrowing, or stealing, model names from other manufacturers. They've done it a lot in the past few years and their next model is Rialto, bringing back the name from the early 1960s Gulbransen. We wondered how prevalent this was and I was challenged to find out. So I have a database of names - just under 900, including repeats. All the major makes have been covered pretty well, so I'm on the lookout for the unusual, the smaller makes, the lesser known models, and so on.

I'm also trying to get the year that the name was first used by each make, so we can see who borrowed from whom! For example, I know that Kentucky 'morphed' into Antone, but in what year?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

As of yesterday, the most used names were 'Chorale' and 'Prelude'. Most appropriate, in view of the large number of Chorale Preludes written by J S Bach, and quite probably because of them! :D

Thanks
Andy

" their next model is Rialto"
Goodness gracious - another one - what size?
Wonder what they will use again from recent models.
Although they are coming out now nearly every year, quite a bit is from way back albeit updated and using larger computer capacity(?)

Not 100% sure, but I think it's another biggie.

BTW, the list got up to around 850 names, but I've already discovered a whole heap more that will have to be added in. The final winner for the most often used name turned out to be Carousel, used 6 time, closely followed by Prelude.

So Lowrey still have to lot to steal, er choose from!

Hi Andy,

I reckon I can muster up some names for you ;) although it might help to know what 'brands' are on the list already.

When I get home, I'll post the link to the so-called 'final' list (it never will be finished, I expect!)

For example, I missed Johannus off the classical section.

Hi

On a very quick skim through the list, I didn't see Hammond L100 etc. nor anything by Jennings.
Current Viscount ranges are Cadet, Envoy & Regent.
Pleased to see the WEM Telstar included - I used to own one. Date for it is roughly 1970 - possibly a bit earlier. Mine was S/H and bought c.1972

I guess this sort of list is like painting the Forth Bridge - never finished!

Every Blessing

The list is all about names not model numbers, so things like L100, X150, D85 or J71 (Jennings, of course!) etc are not included. Where an organ has a model number and a name, like Conn 643 Theatre or Hammond 2107 Concorde, only the name is on the list.

Thanks for the Viscounts. On the list for adding on next time.
