Favourite pieces from the Performance or Challenge Boards

Postby Hugh-AR » 18 May 2017 17:23

When first looking at the Performance Board I realised that there are roughly 2000 songs that have been posted on there. And there must be quite a few in the Challenge Board too. Some are no longer LINKED to (for whatever reason), but there are some really good tunes out there played by some very talented Members.

So .. as it would take an age to listen to all of them, I thought it might be a good idea to start putting some of the performances we really like together, in one place.

And I don't just mean the ones I like. So, have a browse when you have the time, and if you come across anything you really like (in either the Performance Board or the Challenge Board) please click on the POSTREPLY button to this posting and add your choice. And yes, it can be one of your own pieces! Don't by shy! If you like it, list it!

Please give the NAME of the song, the NAME of the Performer, and give a LINK to the music (eg. on YouTube, SoundCloud, Box etc.) .. and a LINK to the posting where it can be found (for anyone who wants to go take a look).

For the LINKS .. just highlight and COPY the URL from the Address Bar at the top of the screen you are viewing.

To highlight the URL, just clicking on the Address Bar will normally do it. If not, click and then 'drag' the mouse from one end of the address to the other.

To COPY (once highlighted) either press the Ctrl (hold it down) and then the letter C on the keypad (Ctrl + C); or do a right-click with the mouse and choose COPY (left-click). The mouse cursor should be over the highlighted bit when you do this.

To PASTE into your posting, put the cursor where you want it to be, then either press the Ctrl (hold it down) and then the letter V on the keypad (Ctrl + V); or do a right-click with the mouse and choose PASTE (left-click).

You can add a short note as to why you chose a particular piece, but please, no comments as REPLIES.

I'll start the ball rolling by putting one up now.

This is called Green Green Grass and was played on a Technics KN-6500 by our very own Mike Bracchi. I really like this 'bouncy' number. Some interesting voicing too.

This is a great one by Pam, played on the Tyros 4. You Only Live Twice (have always liked this song).

And here's one by John (S) from June 2012. Gabriel's Oboe, beautifully played in a 'classical' style.

Really struck by this one! It's Jacko again playing his TRX system (two manuals) and showing off his 'playing technique'.

Jacko's original posting was in February 2015 and can be found here:
http://tierce-de-picardie.co.uk/viewtop ... f=2&t=3506

Our concert at the Weston-super-Mare Organ and Keyboard Club earlier this month was by David Harrild on his Tyros 5 TRX. He seems to be promoting the Tyros 5 TRX System. More information on David Harrild and the Yamaha TRX System here:

http://tierce-de-picardie.co.uk/viewtop ... 314&t=5348

I thought I would throw this one in for good measure. Lonely Shepherd on the Korg PA3X. What a beautiful tune, played by Jacko.

Here is an interesting 'performance', by Wally Gator. He says, " Since I can't play other peoples music I just make up my own." When you listen to this track you have to be amazed at all the sounds he has chosen, and the way he has put them together. Must have taken him an age to think it all out!

Pumkin played by Wally Gator on the Yamaha S910 in June 2012.

Eddie Smart with the theme from "The Odd Couple"
Eddie's playing is excellent and so is his arrangement. I could have chosen any one of his postings as all
of his music is meticulously arranged and played.

Brian has put up so many performances over the years it is difficult to pick on any one to add here, but I really liked this one for the organ sounds Brian has used.

Now here is one I have come across .. Abbie ... .. posted by Johnboy in July 2012. Mike put this comment up:
Wowsers, I like this song, it's completely new to me, the vocal melody and super backing made another very enjoyable few minutes listening ... I will definitely be putting both your granddaughter's performances on to CD for the car.

I just love the rich sounding 'backing' .. and Abbie singing it. Accompaniment is on Johnboy's Tyros 4.

Here is a piano piece I have found from April 2014 that I think is just fabulous (I love piano music). It is from the Challenge section and was played by Ray.

Days Of Wine And Roses

https://app.box.com/s/kb7kr7roaqfg5f60eahzeeygllr36bzm

When I first listened to it, everything was fine until I got to 1min 33secs .. and at that point the recording reverted to Mono on the left hand channel only .. ie. sound only from my left headphone. So what I have done here is, using Audacity, 'copied' that left hand channel to the right channel. This has made the recording from 1:33 onwards 'two track Mono'. ie. the same sound is now in both left and right channels. You can hear the difference between the original stereo and when it changes to two track Mono. I have put up a posting entitled Using Audacity to get 'two-track Mono' in Technical. Click the below to go there:

I must apologise for the delay in replying to your posts. At the moment my mind is elsewhere. I am pleased you thought my 2 tunes were worth posting again and I certainly don't mind you making any improvements to them.
I hope it is not too long before I get back to the piano and many thanks for your concern over my health.

One by Pam. Some wonderful 'choral' sounds in this one.
As I understand it, Pam composed this piece herself. What a talent!
It's one of the most moving pieces I have ever heard.

Beautiful!

I have created a Video of this piece for Pam, which is on YouTube. If you click the 'Watch on YouTube' LINK when the video below starts you will be able to watch on YouTube itself. You will then be able to see how many 'Views' her video has had, and maybe add a 'YouTube Comment' yourself (and maybe even click the LIKE!)

I have put up several new postings in this section today .. starting from Pam's comment saying how nice it was to listen to these songs again. And am I glad I did that, as when I turned my Laptop on this evening it said it was working on the 'updates' that had been downloaded .. 0% completed. Don't turn off your PC. This will take a while. Your PC will restart several times. You can say that again! 35% completed now and a whole hour has passed! This is what Windows 10 can do to you. Glad I have nothing URGENT I have to do on my Laptop.

So I have taken the opportunity to run my Windows XP Desktop machine, to which I have connected a Yamaha PSR 9000 amplification system, complete with sub-woofer. I bought this when Yamaha were selling them off cheap. Bought two, one for my Desktop and one for my TV. They give a superb sound.

So I have listened to all the above tracks through the speakers (rather than headphones). I am completely bowled over by the music I have listened to. What a talented bunch we have in this Forum!

So thank you all for seeing me through what could have been a very frustrating evening. My Laptop is saying 49% completed .. and has just turned itself off and powered up again. One hour and 15 minutes have now passed. I wonder .. will I ever get my Laptop back up and running again?

Hugh

PS. Oooh! It's saying 75% completed now so it may not take much longer.

Now here's one of my favourite pieces, played by Michael Witek in 2014 on a Tyros 5. What I find really interesting about watching Michael play this piece is that he has 'split' his keyboard in two places. He does have a 76 note keyboard which enables him to do this. Had it been any less he wouldn't have had enough notes in each part of the split to do anything meaningful. As it is, you can hear (and see) how he has brought those two 'voices' into his piece.

Of course one could do something like this by 'multi-tracking' and putting the counter-melody in afterwards, but there is something to be said for being able to play a piece like this 'live'.

Tears In Heaven

Any of you can add something to this list (not just me) .. so if you come across anything you really like (including maybe a piece of your own) please post it for us to listen to. If necessary, I will add any other LINKS after you have posted the 'music' LINK.

Now here's an interesting piece of music. Smoke On The Water With A Twist, played by Bernard.

Bernard mentions that he created this using GarageBand. I had never heard of this until Brian(007) mentioned it.
There is a section here with all the GarageBand topics:

It's a while since I have listened to pieces Members have played a while back, and here is one I have found by Claus played on his BOHM Emporio 600. Lara's Theme (Dr. Schiwago) played 'Lames Last' style.

Now here's a great 'Performance' I have found from Lee Anderson in August 2013. Stan Koyama playing his arrangement of a Duke Ellington Medley on their Roland Atelier AT-900C Artist Edition with ATUP-EX "Platinum" upgrade.

And here's an 'own composition' by Wally Gator, from April 2013

Ngoma Wimbo (which translated from the Swahili means Drum Song)

Mike's comment was: "You're just too good at this composing stuff ... even down to the name, it matches the piece perfectly  ".

I second that.

And here's one I have come across by Mike (Bracchi) .. an old Russian Folk Song, Stienka Razin. Or, to put it another way, The Carnival Is Over. Now that is a disappointment! I always thought the Seekers composed that one!
