I’d rather go blind ...

Postby torben » 05 Feb 2018 22:03

Hi friends

Here is me and one of my friends trying out new territory. Playing/singing Etta James big hit from 1967.

Etta James wrote in her autobiography Rage To Survive that she heard the song outlined by her friend Ellington "Fugi" Jordan when she visited him in prison. She then wrote the rest of the song with Jordan, but for tax reasons gave her songwriting credit to her partner at the time, Billy Foster.

Lyrics:

Something told me it was over
When I saw you and her talking
Something deep down in my soul said, 'Cry, girl.'
When I saw you and that girl walkin' out

Whoo, I would rather, I would rather go blind, boy,
Than to see you walk away from me, child, no

Whoo, so you see, I love you so much
That I don't wanna watch you leave me, baby
Most of all, I just don't, I just don't wanna be free, no

Whoo, whoo, I was just, I was just, I was just
Sitting here thinkin' of your kiss and your warm embrace, yeah
When the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips now, baby,
Revealed the tears that was on my face, yeah

Whoo, and baby, baby, I'd rather, I'd rather be blind, boy
Than to see you walk away, see you walk away from me, yeah
Whoo, baby, baby, baby, I'd rather be blind boy
Than to see you walk away, see you walk away from me, yeah

It is extremely fun to play - leaving a lot of space for improvisation

Best greetings

Hi Torben,

Again, what can I say? As far as singing goes, your friend is a true 'jazz' musician, with all those nuances and intonations in her voice. And your 'fills' and improvisations make this a really professional performance. Where do you play this music? Surely not just at home!

Hi Torben. Lovely strong vocals really got into the mood of the song. Liked the style and backing. John

Hi guys

Thank you so much for supporting us! Well, most of the time we play/sing for our own enjoyment, at home, but we also go out sometimes and perform at parties.

When I first met this girl - 3 years ago - she had never sung for anyone before. And so we started, rehearsing for hours, days and months. It was fantastic to see/hear the girl develop her voice and self confidence. Today she is - actually - a skilled performer :D

Best greetings

Hi Torben,

Seemed to have missed this the first time around,

That was a great vocal and backing performance, the singer sure has a fine voice and powerful too
and the backing was spot on a great all round performance.
