Hi Brian,

Just wonderful! My kind of music. This is why I like listening to instrumentals. Nobody singing, so no words, and I can just concentrate on the harmonies and the music.

Brian, that was good. Like the steel guitar sound. Tell me. Does the steel guitar have frets on it? I noticed he was 'sliding' the note in several places. I know there are visible frets there, but I am wondering of these are just markers so you're not guessing 100% where a note should be played (like you have to on a violin). I don't reckon you could slide the note if there were frets.

Hi Hugh,

Not 100% sure but I don`t think they do have frets as a normal guitar does, its that fact that allows the slide effect to happen by using the bar in the left hand and pressing down on to the fret board with the bar , the marks you see will be a guide to where each note should sound such as C D E F etc not even sure what the tuning is on them as I have never played one, very expensive instruments.

Does the steel guitar have frets on it?

Like girls, some do and some don't. This one looks to have 10 strings rather than the normal 6 strings. Many varieties out there. Regards,Den.

Hi

The frets on a steel guitar are only there to guide the player, the strings aren't stopped against them as on a normal guitar. The strings are often set higher than a normal guitar too. The pitch is determined by where the steel (other materials are available - and used) touches the string(s) that are being played. The instruments are sometimes known as a "Hawaiian guitar" - a common term when I was much younger. There are 3 main variants, the Dobro - a form of resonator guitar, in this context played laying across the lap; the lap steel guitar - more or less a normal looking guitar, although often more of a straight plank, it has electric pickups & again is played laying across the lap; and finally the pedal steel guitar - usually a much larger instrument, often with more than 6 strings, played on a stand with foot pedals to change the pitch of certain strings to suit the music, some I've seen have two "necks", presumably to allow alternative tunings. A fascinating instrument, perhaps most prevalent in Country & Western & related musical styles (although Steve Howe, guitarist in the prog band "Yes" uses one at times).

Every Blessing

Tony

Hi ALL,

One thing I do like in music is a good arrangement, and heard this one on the radio this morning and it just personifies to me a big rich full arrangement of a song
If you listen to the middle 8 ( the instrumental ) they have literally thrown every possible instrument in there and it works

Hi ALL,

Here is an example of multi-tracking with many different live instruments but with only two players, these two guys are self employed musicians trying to make a bit during lock down

Brian. Comment from under the video:
Excellent ! Do people realize that this is just one person doing all this ?

I think you would say it's two people doing all this?

Brian,

As our July Challenge is going to be a 'Classical' piece, or a piece 'played in Classical Style' this is a perfect example of what we are after!

Hi ALL,

This is what can happen if you learn to play a instrument in your early years and keep practicing

Hi ALL,

Synths / electronic musical instruments and featured in a few posts lately so here is a piece that was used in a film called Risky Business

This nearly 9 mins long if you don`t like sequenced electronic music I would not bother listening to it

Brian,

Thanks for finding this. A perfect video to add to my topic on the Moog and synthesizers, here:

http://www.tierce-de-picardie.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=450&t=8892

Again, I would just say that hearing the same chord/harmony continuously for the full 9 mins, and the melody 'pattern' doing the same, doesn't exactly satisfy my craving to listen to some good music.
