Calypso Carol

Calypso Carol

The first time I heard this is it was the rhythm that got me. 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2 / 1-2-3, 1-2-3, 1-2 .. and I could not get my head round it. It was not like any 'automated rhythm' I had on my organ. I had to chant this rhythm all day to myself until my brain accepted that this was 'normal'.

What I have done in this piece is to use both hands to play the 'rhythm part' on the Lower manual with piano; then play this back and whilst listening to it add the melody on the Upper. A 'double' recording, which I can do on my organ as I can record the manuals separately.

a very nice relaxing Calypso.
Felt one was bathing on the island in the sun with the waves at the end brushing against sandy beach.

Hi Hugh,

That was definitely something a little different, a very nice melody line and as been said sounded very tropical
which we could do with up north its freezing up here,

Well played Hugh.

Hi Hugh,
What can I say, except brilliant. I listened to it three times on the trot to try to get a handle on that syncopation.
I think I would have to sit at the piano and play along to catch it. This is definitely the kind of thing
that grabs my attention. In my opinion (for what it's worth) this is pretty complex playing and what making music is
all about. As you mentioned in a previous post, we could sit and play 100 tunes on the trot but there is no challenge in that.
Maybe you will know better than me but I remember a renowned mathematician was asked to summarise what mathematics was.
He summed it up beautifully by saying, "If X then Y" That is what I try to do with a piece of music. (I hope you catch my drift.)

Hi Hugh
Just listened to your Calypso Carol with
the complicated tempo,It put me in mind
of Dave Brubeck's Take Five which was
five beats to the bar.
Well played you
Don

Thanks all for your comments. I think Brian (papadeedee) has nailed it on the head when he says this is what making music is all about. If I hear something that inspires me I just have to analyse what I am listening to and come up with a way to play it. Hugh
