Max,

Thanks for posting this one. I have mentioned in several places that with an organ one can have the Upper and the Lower set up with two different sounding voices and can jump down from one manual to the other .. and even play both manuals at once by stretching one's fingers between one manual and the other. Peter Hayward is doing this in this clip.

Hi

One reason (aside from history) for larger church & theatre organs having 3 or 4 (or occasionally more) manuals is to allow different sounds to be set up & used without having to manipulate the stops. It's very useful - even on organs that have lots of pistons to bring on pre-set combinations.

There are also a handful of pieces that just aren't playable as the composer intended on less than 3 manuals.

I've yet to play anything larger than a 5 manual.
