Jazz arranger Gerry Mulligan

Postby dentyr » 24 Nov 2023 13:58

I loved Gerry Mulligan right from the start. Why? NO PIANO! No guitar either. The Gerry Mulligan quartet with Chet Baker is just the best. I had 2 10" LP vinyl records, loaned them to someone and never saw them again. I bought the whole series on CD.

Listen, great music.

My favorite tracks are "My Funny Valentine" and "Moonlight in Vermont". Deliberate and slow. .

Oh dear! Seems I am the only person who doesn't like this sort of JAZZ. No PIANO, no GUITAR!

Now here's some JAZZ that I do like!

PIANIST .. yes! BASS PLAYER (Ron) .. yes! DRUMMER .. yes! And that's it!

Did you honors and listened to the first 40 seconds. If that's what you like OK. Couldn't listen to any more of that.

My type of music, harmonic and deliberate.

Moonlight in Vermont. A track from my CD.

Everyone to their own taste.

Deliberate playing .. but no harmony.

Sorry folks, but neither of these did much for me. BTW, Chet Baker (Jerry Mulligan quartet, trumpet,) has a wonderful singing voice which is very reminiscent of Mel Torment. Jazz without piano is a non starter for me. Imagine Oscar Peterson trio without a piano !

One example of Oscar Peterson’s talent plus the added talent of his bassist Ray Brown.

Hello Ron, Had that vinyl LP back in the 1950's. Great playing. George Shearing was another favorite. Still like piano.

You could always pick out the bones of the tune when he played and he never lost it in a finger gymnastic display as some of his contemporaries did. Great bassist, who is unknown to me, but a good walking bass style plus his soloing ability was something else.
I remember trying to play Lullaby of Birdland with both hands sharing the melody chords but never quite succeeded.
