Sound Combinations

I've be experimenting with some registrations (sounds combinations), but it's not just the sounds themselves which can be layered, it's the type of effect that can be added to the overall sound.

Reverb can turn a flat sound into a big sound, but don't over do it, also think would the instruments I'm using benefit from a small or large amount of reverb?

Another effect I use is Chorus that can create a bigger sound.

For guitar sounds I've been using some delay, but working on the other effects.

If you use styles revoice the sounds, mute some of the tracks to create a less busy style, better still try without any style.

James,

Some interesting observations there. To pick up on just one of them:
Reverb can turn a flat sound into a big sound.

Here is a case in point .. Don Wherly applying loads of 'reverb' to a saxophone on one of his tracks. He starts off with a trumpet .. and then when the saxophone comes in for the first time it sent shivers down my spine!
For best effect turn the volume up a bit!

Hi James,

Effects can change the sound of the voices a lot and used correctly they are a good thing. The one thing I wholeheartedly agree with you is that muting some of the voices in the style does make a big difference to the end product

Piano and Strings together always make a good voice combination. Watch the video below to see how to do this. But I think I would have the piano at 'normal' (ie. 8') and the strings an octave higher (ie. at 4'). He doesn't actually try this combination in the video.

Here is a demo of setting up some sounds on a Korg.

Putting it all into Practice

Not sure if I approve of these long intros some keyboards seem to have before you can start playing the song. And a lot of these intros are a lot more sophisticated than the music that follows.
