Ideas for sounds that work well with Accordion sounds ?

I wouldn't put any other sound with a piano accordion. An accordion is a 'stand alone' bit of kit, although I suppose you could have a drummer playing along with it. Anything else would shatter the 'atmosphere' a piano accordion creates.

Just my opinion after playing in a Scottish Country Dance Band. We just had piano, drums and piano accordion .. and although I did play piano to accompany the accordion it was more a case of providing a 'chord backing' and not trying to blend in with the melody he was playing.

I have tried string sound / violin / cello instruments work well. I’ve also tried wind instruments. Pairing up different types of accordion sounds layered also work well.

At church when we have certain songs with a Celtic feel, I sometimes layer accordion under my basic piano sound (Technics digital piano).

While we're discussing accordions, our minister asked if there was a good accordion sound on the digital piano we had at the time. I checked & said "yes, but I can do better than that". I have a basic 48 bass piano accordion that I inherited from my father, so I played that for the couple of items he'd written with an accordion (plus other instruments) in mind.

Firstly I think it depends on the Actual Accordion sound begin used, it is being played as a solo instrument or an ensemble. But as a Solo Instrument the Accordion seems to work well with strings such as Violin, Pad Sounds, and Vocal Sounds such as choirs, another sound that works well is a piano sound.

I often layer the piano sound with strings, or church organ or Hammond Organ at church - although not as much as I used to since we got a decent digital piano! I rarely layer with voices - it just seems odd when playing for singing, although I have done that at other times.
