Another point to consider when setting up Registrations. Remember that when you play something for others to listen to, it's the sounds from
your Registration that they will be listening to. And what may sound great to some, may not sound so great to others.
HeadphonesI have
three sets of headphones that I use. All good quality ones, and they all sit across my head with headpiece earphone cushions over my ears. But they all sound different when listening to music.
My Sennheiser ones I use when playing/recording the organ as I reckon they are the most 'neutral' regarding the sound.
I then have some 'walk-about' radio headphones .. Sony. They are useful as I can listen to music anywhere in the bungalow .. lounge, kitchen, bedroom .. even outside on the patio. But the quality of sound is nowhere near as rich as the Sennheiser ones. Everything sounds a bit 'tinny', and there is not much bass. Oh yes, and
I have a volume control on these too. Imagine using these to set up a Registration on my organ. For starters the overall volumes I would choose would be dependant on where I had the headphone volume set in the first place! So I don't use these when setting up Registrations.
Then I have some Sony headphones that were advertised as
having an 'enhanced' bass. Great, I thought, as I like to hear a good bass. And I use these on my laptop to listen to YouTube. Some of those videos are not very well recorded, and wearing these headphones does improve the sound by having an 'enhanced' bass. But I can't listen to some Members' MP3 recordings as the bass just 'thumps'. DonW's "Home In Pasadena" is a case in point. But if I use the Sennheiser ones to listen, the bass sounds perfect. So I wouldn't use these 'enhanced bass' Sony headphones to set up Registrations on my organ either.
SpeakersWhen using speakers, there must be so many different setups for the sound you hear. And that would influence how you set your Registrations up.
When James (
NativeAngels) was talking about "
How Effects Can Change Your Sound" he said:
I noticed that on the styles, Adam and Luke had put an Amp effect on the bass sound of the styles. The Amp effect on looking at it can be changed to have different cabinets. I was thinking how do the different cabinets affect the bass sound.
This makes me wonder how a Registration would sound in these different situations.
Looks to me as though setting up a Registration to play something is a minefield. Not for the faint hearted!Hugh
