Completely "ad lib" ...

Postby Hugh-AR » 05 Aug 2019 23:03

Have you ever sat down at your organ/keyboard and just "ad libbed" ... ie. played what came into your head as you went along? Not the same as a 'Composition', as that has a deliberate structure which can be repeated. If you haven't got the RECORD button on while you are doing it then what you have played is lost for ever.

Here is a piece by John Traves (JPT) where he has done just that.

Here's another example of an "ad lib", done by Hans (Papa Joe).

Papa Joe has been "ad-libbing" again. This is what he said:
A time ago I was "in a flow of play around" , inspired by a slow, simple style, equipped with some OTS voices meeting that what I wanted to hear, and so I pressed the RECORD button and started a play in "AD LIB" manner.

And here's one by Don Wherly (DonW). This is what he says about it:
A while ago now I just sat at the organ, started the Bossa Nova rhythm going and ad-libbed this piece as I went along. The second time I played it I may have not played it exactly the same, but now I have done it a few times the pattern of the melody has stuck in my head and I reckon it ends up pretty well the same every time.

Another 'ad-lib' by Papa Joe. A waltz this time. This is what he said:
A Sunday morning, sitting on the balcony, having a fresh cup of coffee, a tasteful cigar, listening to the Blackbirds and Blackcaps, just relaxing from inactivity, this feeling brought me to the following Ad Lib Waltz, beginning with a smooth flute.....
