Glastonbury with caravan

Postby lesh » 02 Apr 2019 16:10

Hello All,

The wife and I love caravanning and use our touring caravan most months, sometime only for a few days and sometime longer, last week we managed a few days on a site on the outskirts of Glastonbury.
We use the Glastonbury site as a central point and as well as Glastonbury we will travel out visiting villages, garden centres completing walks and cycle rides.
Last week we aimed to complete a cycle ride called the Strawberry Line which follows an old railway line from Cheddar to Yatton. We completed 22 miles round trip that day, lovely countryside, excellent weather and a nice coffee stop at Yatton, well worth the effort if your into cycling.
Another place we enjoy visiting is the garden centre near Highbridge then on to Brean and a walk along the beach, nice if the weathers good.
Evenings in the caravan are usually a glass or two of red wine whilst using the laptop for sourcing or rewriting a sheet music project ready to use once we return home, Club Dances at the moment.

Will try and load some photos from my next trip out.

Regards

Hi Les,

This is the area where I live. We have walked the Strawberry Line in several sections .. with the dog. Most of the plants in our garden have come from the Highbridge garden centre, and when you drove to Brean you would have gone straight past Bronwyn's family home on the left, Sunningcrest Caravan Site. It's still run by family.

In our younger days, Bronwyn and I (and our children) would have climbed to the top of Glastonbury Tor for the fabulous views.

PS. Best to avoid this area when the Glastonbury Pop Festival is on, which this year is from Wednesday 26th June to Saturday 30th June. Unless, of course, you like the modern day Pop Music .. and you like loads of mud. For some reason whenever the Glastonbury Festival is on it always seems to pour with rain!

Hi Hugh,

From the caravan site we can walk up through two fields to the Tor and down the other side into Glastonbury, quite a nice walk, the site is called The Old Oaks. We normal visit twice a year, but in the quite times. We avoid the carnival and Festival times.
I can understand you buying plants from Highbridge garden centre, nice place to visit but noticed a lot of coaches tend to visit which certainly fills up the cafe area.

We really loved cycling the Strawberry Line, quite, loads of wildlife and loads of History, if you live near this area your very lucky.

Another place we tend to visit around October time both for a daytime walk and also evening time to watch the starlings flying in formation, is Ham Wall near the RSPB, well worth a visit.

Les,

We have been to Ham Wall a couple of times in October, having been told that we would find the starlings there .. but never saw a starling! But the one place we have seen them is at Slimbridge, on the River Avon estuary.
