Perranporth

Postby Hugh-AR » 22 Apr 2019 17:29

This April we have been to a family wedding in Perranporth. If you don't know where Perranporth is, it is a seaside town on the North Cornish coast, just west of Newquay. Fabulous beach, and if you have a dog you are allowed to take it on the beach all year. Restrictions in summer are (from the Perranporth Guide):
Dogs are currently allowed on Perranporth beach all year around. During July and August, they are however required to be on a lead between 10am and 5pm.

The wedding took place in St. Michaels Mission Church in Perranporth. The bride's brother (Michael Burke) happened to be a concert pianist who worked near London, so he played for all the music chosen for the service. Not on the church organ, but on a Grand Piano (a white one) that they had 'brought in' specially for the occasion (ie. not his piano). I asked the Vicar if they had had to take the roof off the church in order to get the piano in as the doorway into the church was far too narrow for a Grand Piano! But she said no, it was all done by a Cornish company who specialise in this sort of thing. They first unscrewed the legs of the piano, then tilted it up on it's side and manhandled it through the doorway. Once inside they just screwed the legs back on again.

Michael did tell me that with all that transporting and shifting about, the piano did have to be tuned .. several times over a period of about an hour and hopefully get it to settle down. He did say to me that by the end of the service it was getting a little out of tune again, but I assured him that it would only have been him that would have noticed that.

He also said to me that he didn't have 'perfect pitch' (I had asked him if he had). From Wikipedia:
Being able to recognize a pitch without an external reference is called absolute pitch, commonly referred to as perfect pitch. This is a rare trait. Studies show around one in ten thousand people have perfect pitch. However, many never discover they have it.

So he wouldn't have been able to sing an 'A', or notice particularly if the piano wasn't pitched quite correctly .. but he could sing any note at any interval, based on the starting note.

There is more on 'Perfect Pitch' in this topic:

Hi Hugh. Looks as if you had a good time. The music a bonus. We are back from our trip to Fort William. Photos taken of the famous bridge. Entertainment good for four nights keyboards, accordion singing and comedy. John
