Name That Song (from a line in the LYRICS)

PostPosted: 03 Nov 2023 01:58

At our organ Club tonight we had a Quiz.

Name That Song from a line in the LYRICS. These are songs that were very popular during the war years (you can tell from that what the average age of our organ club Members is!). When we named the song, the Artiste (pianist this time) played the song and we all sang it.

There were 20 questions. I'll put them up here one at a time. Here is the first one:

1. "Wherever there's a cottage small. Beside a field of grain."

Do you know the Title of the song with those words in it? If you do, please post your answer as a POSTREPLY.

No cheating by doing a Google Search!

When I have had an answer I will post the next question.

The Vera Lynn song reminded me of that day. My Mums piano was dragged out to the street and she thumped away for hours. Everybody let their hair down. Wonderful times. Ken S.

Quite right, Ken!

White Cliffs of Dover VERA LYNN (with lyrics)

No: 5.

5. The other night dear.

Ken .. by all means wait a while before clicking on POSTREPLY again. But I have a feeling that knowing all the LYRICS of these songs is an 'age' thing. I have been talking to Ron about it, and he says that although he knows all the songs we have mentioned so far, he doesn't know any of the words. And I am the same. Know the songs, and could play them 'by ear' on my Tyros 4. But the words? No idea! In fact, at organ club where the quiz was held, I only knew one of the answers .. out of 20!

First thoughts; "adieu mein kleiner gardeoffizier" from "Im Weissen Rossl" White horse Inn (I have the whole full score music script for that.) but thinking about it
Gracie Fields came to mind "WIsh me luck"?
Both very similar."You won't see my heels for the dust."
Den
ps: You really are wracking my brains for these. Dragging memories from the past. Last time I saw Gracie Fields was on TV, she tried to sing this piece but she was so drunk they had to carry her off. Think it was "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" with Val Parnell.

Den,

Well remembered! Yes, Gracie Fields sang that song .. as did Vera Lynn. But it was probably a soldier like the one below who sang it.
