Brian ...

I thought you would be the first to get that answer! Can you get something sorted and put up a 'Name That Tune' for us? It's no fun for me to guess the answers to my own postings!

I'm sure you can see what I am trying to do here .. keep the answers away from the questions so people can have a listen without seeing the answer.

Tune No: 3

Brian,

Reckon I know that tune. It's this one:

https://app.box.com/s/tblglcqhgejf9pizgt4z5dmc7wjf2izz

1955. I was 13 years old. We didn't have a record player, and we didn't have a television. Will have to cast my mind back as to who sang it .. and the Easy Riders? Who were they ??? Will come back here when I have all the answers.

Tune No: 2 is Move It, Cliff Richard. The clip I had put up here is from a tape of Cliff that I had called From The Heart. It appears that Cliff re-recorded Move It in 1983, and with better recording technology, that bass part is very much enhanced compared with the 1958 version. This was the only track on the tape that was not recorded in the late 50s/early sixties.

The Move It track was so striking I did try to put it up on YouTube (the video bit just showed the tape sleeve and the tracks listed), but guess what? They just left the video bit and zapped all the music. So no point leaving it there. I don't think Cliff is too thrilled with YouTube.

I have found the answers to Tune No: 3 now .. Memories Are Made Of This. The most popular version of the song was recorded by Dean Martin in 1955. He was backed by The Easy Riders (who consisted of Gilkyson, Dehr, and Miller), who wrote it. So now I know who the 'Easy Riders' were .. Dean Martin's backing group.

Brian,

Quite right. I just love that sound. You almost might think that the zither is the forerunner of the modern keyboard, in that the way it is set up you have two distinct sections: an area where you can play the chords (ie. the left of the 'split'); and a completely different set-up enabling you to play the melody (ie. the right of the split).

It has taken me a couple of years to get this sound (or similar) out of the AR, and that extract was just a small part of my attempt at playing this piece .. which I will put up in the Performance Board so you can hear all of it.

In the meantime, here is a short extract on YouTube of the zither being played by the composer, who also recorded it on the zither for the film. Clicking on this LINK will, of course, give you all the answers to the questions I asked in Name That Tune No: 4.

No suggestions to Name That Tune No: 5, from May, 2017 so I had better give the answers.

Name That Tune 5A is Ave Maria by Schubert ...

Name That Tune 5B is the Bach/Gounod Ave Maria.

So both are 'Ave Maria', but different tunes by different composers.

Name That Tune No: 6

No:1 Over The Waves.
No:2 Juventino Rosas.
No:3 The Great Caruso.
No:4 The Loveliest Night of the Year.
No:5 Mario Lanza.
No:6 1951.

George was the one who set me off thinking about this song when he put it into the Performance Board and called it "Over The Waves":

viewtopic.php?f=2&t=5286

It was George calling this piece Over The Waves that threw me. I had always known this tune as It's the loveliest night of the year, so I decided to do some research .. and George was right! The song was originally called Over The Waves.
