“Community Keyboards” Oldham Community Radio 99.7FM

Postby Hugh-AR » 22 Sep 2018 22:38

I have had the following from Ian Wolstenholme who says:
Dear Hugh and Brian

As you may know I produce/present “Community Keyboards”, Oldham Community Radio 99.7FM. I wonder if I might be able to include the winning entry to the August (and future) challenge in one of my forthcoming editions of the programme? If this is something which could be considered, all I would need would be the consent of the performer and perhaps a short biography to introduce. Would be great to have your thoughts.

Best wishes,

Ian Wolstenholme

Now that the first 'Challenge' has ended and we have a Winner (actually, four 'Joint' Winners for August) I have contacted Ian again so he can update us as to what happens next. In the meantime, check out "Community Keyboards":

When you scroll down the page, you then have to scroll down the white section in the middle to get the complete list of Ian's various broadcasts.

Hello

Well, I must say how delighted I am to be able to include the winning entry or, in the case of the August Challenge, entries, on my Community Keyboards programme. As is so often the case, being a recorded programme, we have to work at least a month in advance, so this means that - and here we go with dates for the diary - the August winners will be featured in the second of our two November editions which will be broadcast on Oldham Community Radio 99.7FM on Thursday 8th November at 9.02am and repeated Thursday 22nd November at 9.02am. Being a community radio station, our FM signal reaches across much of the Greater Manchester/Cheshire region - but that it!! The good news for everyone else is that the two November editions are uploaded to https://anchor.fm/communitykeyboards a little ahead of that - on Sunday 28th October around 7pm.

Hope you enjoy the programme!

Obviously we can't listen to the actual Radio Broadcast as we are not in the Oldham/Manchester/Cheshire area. Hence the Website Ian has set up above .. so that anyone anywhere can listen to his broadcasts.

If you click on the main LINK to Ian's broadcasts you will see this:

... and then you have to scroll down the white listing in the middle until you find 2018_November_Edition_2.

Program Edition 2 runs for nearly an hour and features mainly 'Theatre Organists'. Ian interviews a few of these, which are organists he is featuring on his program. Also mentioned are Don Wherly, Peter Slack, Hugh Wallington and Eileen Lowry, the TDP Challenge Winners.

Oldham Community Radio

I sent an email to Ian Wolstenholme at Oldham Community Radio giving him the Winners of the October Challenge. I also said:
When will you be putting up your next 'on-line' broadcast of your Community Radio? Now that we know where you are, several Members have listened to ALL your broadcasts going all the way back to when you started them. They have said that they enjoy your program more than they used to enjoy 'The Organist Entertains' (of course, now no longer being broadcast) as you have those interviews with Artistes, which are brilliant! And you cater for Electronic Organs too, which The Organist Entertains had stopped doing. They are hooked on your program!

I have now had this from Ian:
Hello Hugh

Hope all is well and very many thanks for your kind email. The next two editions of Community Keyboards will be uploaded to the website this Sunday evening (25/11/2018). These will be the “Christmas” shows (as you may expect!) and will include the September Challenge winners.

It’s lovely to hear that some forum members are enjoying the programme too. I do try to provide a mix of all organ and keyboard genres but to receive these comments is very encouraging indeed.

I’ve downloaded the October winners which will slot into the February editions.

Thanks again and all good wishes.

Ian

But before I do that ...

Hi Ian,

Tell you what. I really enjoy listening to your Oldham Community Radio Broadcasts (well, the on-line versions as I am not in the Oldham area to listen 'live'). And so do several other Members of our Forum (and the AR Group Forum, which I also run). One thing I would like to know is how you record your 'artistes' playing 'proper' organs. It's easy with electronic organs as we do it from a LINE OUT or a Headphone socket; and with keyboards you can usually do it dirctly from the keyboard as a WAV file (or MP3).

You obviously have a microphone for your interviews, but doing those recordings? Two mics and two channels? Or jut the one mic. And where in the venue do you position your mics to get the best sound overall?

I have updated the TDP June Challenge winners which are featured in your September broadcast in my post just above this one.

I notice that this TOPIC (Community Keyboards Oldham Community Radio 99.7FM):

http://www.tierce-de-picardie.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=348&t=6721

.. has had nearly 4 thousand views since I started it (it can by viewed by 'Guests' .. people visiting our Forum .. as well as by Members).

I have also put a 'plug' in the Topic that is at the top of every Board in the Forum, Hints for when browsing the TDP Forum (which again is available for anyone finding our Forum to view):

http://www.tierce-de-picardie.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=348&t=5934&p=48756#p48756

.. and this Topic has had nearly 242 thousand 'views' to date since I started it.

I do like the mix of organs/keyboards you have in your programmes (and the interviews, of course) and think they sit well together. Pity the BBC didn't take this view. The Organist Entertains might still be on air if they had done.

I have had this from Ian ...

Hi Hugh

Now you are making me blush! I really am pleased that you enjoy the programmes as much as I enjoy compiling them. I made a deal years ago that, wherever possible, I would not just be a “this is…that was…” kind of production. The opportunities to get out and about to record instruments are great - I’m only too sorry that I’m restricted with (a) time and (b) licence coverage obligations by Ofcom insofar as being only able to cover reasonably “local” installations. As luck has it, my colleagues who produce the “Organist Encores” do give exposure to many southern-based theatre organs, so not too many complaints!

In terms of actually recording them, I’m afraid it’s nothing fancy! I generally use my ever-faithful Zoom H4N Pro recorder with either one external stereo mic or (depending on the auditorium) two external mono mics and mix to stereo later. The built-in stereo microphones on the H4N are themselves really good as they can be manually adjusted to give a fairly wide sound. I also use an iPad mini with a plug in lightning Shure Motiv MV88 mic which is a very portable piece of kit and has always delivered really good recordings, either voice or music. You may occasionally hear me mention in the introductions that it’s “from the seat in the audience perspective” - and that’s exactly how I like to record theatre organ. Most venues use concert seating so I usually try to find an end seat somewhere central and hit “record”. Invariably there are coughs and splutters but I argue that it adds to the ambience - most can be quite easily edited out!

At Oldham Community Radio we use Adobe Audition for editing but at home I tend to use (the very similar) Audacity. I went to the annual Community Media Association Conference last Saturday and was very impressed with a software package called Hindenburg - but a bit pricey! It’s actually quite odd, because I still have my Sony Minidisk recorder/Beyer Dynamic mic set-up at home from the ’80’s and it still knocks spots off all the above. You just get some odd looks if you use it in the public domain these days! Hand on heart? I’m old enough to remember using the Revox B77 reel-to-reel recorder which weighed a ton and still believe that there is/was nothing to touch this kind of analogue recording. Sadly my own B77 went to heaven many years ago but the station has one in its archive in case anyone needs (or has) tapes to play. Back in 1981, I carted the darn thing to North Yorkshire to record Franz Lambert, transferred the master reel to a metal cassette (remember those?) which has stood the test of time.

I am absolutely STAGGERED Hugh at the number of views you’ve indicated and so pleased that the Challenge works for you. Here again, especially these days, I feel it’s extremely important to include “proper” home organ and keyboard music and not just the seasoned professionals. In the November programme I chat with Tom Horton who places much value on the “hobby” or “lifestyle” (his words) aspect of amateur home playing.

Thanks for all your good work with TDP.

Very best wishes

Owing to a lack of available time in this broadcast our two Winners have been 'blended together'.
Check them out at 48:00.

David Hamory (tucsondave) with Once Upon a Time in the West.
John Pringle (jackoj) with Where Is Your Heart (Theme song from the film Moulin Rouge).

Must admit, Ian has presented their 'performances' brilliantly, and listening to these two playing they really are on a par with the professional players.

Hugh Wallington (Hugh-AR) with House Of The Rising Sun.
Don Wherly (DonW) with Stardust.
Brian Dawson (Brian007) with Telstar.

Check them out at 34:20 in the Edition 3 broadcast. I haven't been very observant when listening to Ian's broadcasts, and have never noticed a 'time' showing where the programme has got to. It's taken Don to point out to me that there is a black 'time line' that runs along the bottom, and just above that, on the far left, there is a time showing in minutes and seconds. It's just under, and to the left of, the double lined 'pause' button, and is so feint I had to get a magnifying glass out to read it!

Ian did say in his broadcast that Don was playing the Tyros 5 keyboard. Of course Don doesn't have a keyboard, and is playing the Yamaha AR100 organ.

Jon Davis (JonD) with All My Loving.

You can hear Jon play just after the interval at 31:50 in the Edition 3 broadcast. To find where you have got to in Ian's broadcast, there is a black 'time line' that runs along the bottom, and just above that, on the far left, there is a time showing in minutes and seconds. It's just under, and to the left of, the double lined 'pause' button. If you click with your mouse along that timeline and keep an eye on the time showing you can easily find where Jon is playing.
