Synthesizers: the Minimoog, from the 70s etc.

Follow the life of the Minimoog Synthesizer from its inception through its prolific contributions to poplular music throughout the last 4 decades.

A Brief History of the Minimoog Part I

Chronicling the influential artists who used the Minimoog Model D to explore new genres and discover the sounds of tomorrow.

A Brief History of the Minimoog Part II

Am I correct in saying that The Beatles were pioneers in the use of the Moog, and Wings the Minimoog in the mid-70’s?

And if you want to hear what the latest Moog sounds like, listen to this. Wear headphones as what you listen to is 'panned' continuously from left to right, and back, rather the way Carloss was doing with Audacity with some of his music.
Electronic music pioneer Suzanne Ciani and multidisciplinary visual artist Scott Kiernan invite you to reimagine conventional ideas of music, sound, and expression through a delicate balance of mystery and order in this experimental piece composed entirely with the new Moog.

Moog Subharmonicon | Suzanne Ciani + Scott Kiernan | Music as Living Matter

Incidentally, apart from the artwork, I don't find the music above particularly creative. Why would you want to have the same chord/harmony going for three whole minutes? And the same with the melody. And it's not a 'melody' .. it's just a pattern of notes. All this 'music bending' is a bit way out for me. I think I will just stick to an Arranger Keyboard, or, as in my case, an Arranger Organ.

Hi Hugh,

Some very interesting videos in the post, while I own a synth , I still struggle to find synth voices on it I like and It has the capability to create your own
to me you need the right genre of music for a Moog or any synth sound and to me that genre is Film and TV scores as thats mostly where instrumental music is used today

Brian,

Years ago when I went to music/keyboard shows, where the manufacturers had all their products and were demonstrating them, I had no idea what they all were, and was totally put off getting something that made weirdy sounds. I didn't play in a band, and didn't compose music so couldn't see a use for any of the things I saw. And in my mind I had 'Arranger Keyboards' tarred with the same brush, which is why I never bought one. Knowing what I know now, I would certainly have bought one if a demonstrator had shown me the basics of what they could do, rather than try to be clever and demonstrate all the things I would never use it for.

Brian (Brian007) has found another video, not of the Moog this time, but something similar.

Tangerine Dream - Love On A Real Train (State Azure Cover)

And here's another one that I have found.

Tangerine Dream - The Dream Is Always The Same (State Azure Cover)

I think the title to this just about sums it up. Listening to both the videos above, the dream is always the same. Again, I would just say that hearing the same chord/harmony continuously, and the melody 'pattern' doing the same, doesn't exactly satisfy my craving to listen to some good music. But then the video Brian found, above, has had in excess of 7 million views, and one of the comments under it is:
I know, it's subjective and kind of not fair to say, because technology has advanced pretty much – but your cover surpasses the original in every aspect – I don't say it often, because it's kind of overused – I LOVE this version and can't get enough of it. True Audio Excellence.

And the one I found has had 60 thousand views, and this comment was posted:
Ever since I was a small child I've been enthralled by electronic music. I didn't really know how to describe it until much later, but I knew what I was after. I saw it wayyy too young, but the Risky Business soundtrack was magic to me. Even though I didn't know a single soul that shared my passion until I was in my 20s, I knew there was something special about this music. I am absolutely delighted that we have amazing and talented people like you making such beautiful music. I feel so lucky to be alive during this resurgence of electronic music and golden age of creativity.

Just as well we all have different tastes in music. I think I must be really missing something in life.

Hi Hugh,

I agree its not everybody's cup of tea, most of the tunes in the two videos are sequenced using repeating arpeggios and riffs and octave bass lines and a lot of wonderful effects and that`s what I mean when I say you need the right genre of music to justify having those types of instruments and film scores and TV adverts are a there main genre, because unless its the main film theme it has to be in the background and repetitive music like that is easier to listen to while watching the film.
even films that use music with loads of strings is done on a computer with loads of sampled strings. here is a video to illustrate what I mean.

Brian,

This shows you can create music without pressing any white and black notes?

Moving on to another synthesizer which had it's origins in the Minimoog.

Hi Hugh,

Now you're getting to specialist kit here, very much collectors Items and worth serious money , but the way to go for poor home musicians is to get the VST version which is basically the original machine that has been sampled and incorporated in to whats known as a VST plug in for software workstations which allows you to use there sampled voices but you do not need any hardware apart from a computer and midi keyboard, all clever stuff

Hi Hugh,

A interesting video ,

An arpeggiator is a synthesis tool that uses MIDI or control voltages to cycle through a series of notes according to a clock rate and note division. Arpeggiators earned their name from the arpeggio–a phenomenon in music theory where notes of a chord are played one after another in sequence.

incredibly creative and useful tool in the right hands and has been the basis of many modern day theme tunes

Many may say it not true music and I agree definitely not as we know it , but increasingly used in Film and TV scores
