T5: News up-date

Postby Mike Bracchi » 08 Nov 2013 15:45

This has been posted on another forum of which I am a member ... very interesting 8)

"Hi all

Just spent 30 mins today talking to my acquaintance who has recently attended a full demo of the T5 by Peter Baartmans and also spent some time playing it.

He says that it revolutionises arrangers.
The thing he seemed most blown away by was the new "Ensemble" humanisation feature and I have to admit that I was very impressed just hearing about it!!!
He said the OS was much the same.
It features live audio drum loops in styles.
It is definitely going to be offered in 3 packages:-
61-note with speakers
76-note
76-note with speakers.

He believes price for 61 (incl speakers) will be much the same as T4 and that the 76 version (without speakers) will be the same as 61 version.
There is no touch screen - Baartmans is alleged to have said that Yam gave this a lot of thought and were convinced that this screen is better in comparison to other recent Yam keyboards with touch screen..
Basic OS and button functionality is much the same (total negative for me)
The keyboard control surface layout is the same.
His opinion of PA3X (which he also has) is that it is way too complex in comparison and now site way behind the PA3X.

He believes that there is no comparison with T5 and PA3X - and says T5 is now so far advanced.

That's all I can tell you.
Expected to trickle through in December and 76 will be early next year.

Interesting but I am SO disappointed that they are sticking with the old OS and have not considered simple things like bass inversion and tempo lock.

It seems to me that Yam (T5) may have carried on where Audya left off....

Cheers

Pete"

I'm more excited about this now, especially if it is an advancement on the Audya ... it's got to be good, very very good :D

Cheers Mike.
The Bass inversion and tempo lock is available on the Tyros range.
If there's no glitches with the audio styles, it's an advancement on the Audya

The great new feature of the long awaited Yamaha Tyros 5: Authentic Ensemble Performance

Translated from French by 'google'
The Authentic Performance Ensemble

These performances are grouped SECTION called by fully editable PRESET

As each new version, Yamaha gives us a device with one or two important new features:. Authentic performance together
Designed to give a touch "human" with small and subtle changes over time, mixed with all the other voices.
This will introduce a notion of offsets as group play with real musicians. It is too early to know the implications of this option on the final sound, but Yamaha has always accustomed us to the effects and sound quality and most importantly, in my opinion, a lot of musicality in the game thing that I see when I play a Yamaha instrument and I can not find on other brands arrangers. But this is a personal opinion. Try it as soon as possible.

I démarrerai a new series of pictures in TUTORIALS with numerous posts to help you use all the possibilities of the Yamaha Tyros arrangers. Keep checking this site (bookmarquez it!) And become a fan of the Facebook page poubnews to be aware of all new publications. A soon!

Wotcha John,

It's seems to be rattling cages on all the forums that aren't Yamaha supporters ... there is a Roland owner on one forum that has given me a real good laugh this week - he really needs to pop a few Prozac to calm down a tad

Yes I think we can say Yamaha are doing it again and giving us a first class keyboard. We should know a lot more on Monday.

While the T5 has no purchasing interest to me (It cannot import 3rd party sounds and does not have a VST Host on-board, not forgetting you have to buy a new keyboard to get any updates) I am curious about the ensemble voices and to see if my guess at what they are is correct.

Third party voices or UVN files will still work in both models but you will need flash memory. If you already have this in your Tyros 4 then remove it to use in Tyros 5. The ensemble feature is a first so far on any keyboard and will add a whole new side to playing with mixed instruments. I think you will all be pleasantly surprised.

Unfortunately the UVM is a proprietary format so has a miniscule number of additional voices available compared to the Akai Format.

VSTs are what professional Film & Music Studios use, which are way beyond anything that can be achieved with current arranger/organ models, which is why I always require an instrument to have a VST Host on-board.

So long as the T5 doesn’t repeat the mistakes of the T3 (Which was a bit of a disaster) and follows on from the T4 it should be a fantastic arranger, and can’t wait to see what it can do.

Here is a couple of entry level VSTs that might interest you

Here is an entry level ensemble brass VST

http://sonivoxmi.com/products/details/s ... mble-brass

Must admit can’t wait to get back from work on the 11th to see what demos are on the web.

Hi Bill,
I think a lot of us just buy a keyboard to sit and play it so VST's would not really matter. I know some people use them but the fun for me is seeing just what the keyboard alone will do.

I personally think all this talk of VSTi's (Virtual Instrument Technology Instruments) is something of a red herring.

There are just a few arrangers that can load them in and play them, Wersi being the obvious one that Bill will be thinking of. However, as Bill and I both know very well, just playing a VSTi from a keyboard isn't going to make a sound that's much better than you get from a Tyros, if it's any better at all. Most VSTi's, like the excellent Garritan ones Bill mentions, are designed to be used in sequencers, not played live. To get the best out of them you'll be adding in lots of controller data to articulate and control the sound (something that Yamaha nailed on Tyros 3 with Super Articulation 2 voices).

The best solo violin VSTi you'll ever hear is Garritan's alas now discontinued 'Stradivari'. But out of the box, just played live as you would play it on an arranger keyboard - with one hand - it sounds awful, like a raw beginner, albeit a raw beginner playing a Strad! To get the violin to play like a real instrument, you have to use both hands and both feet. Right hand controls the note(s) being played, of course, along with attack speed with initial touch, vibrato depth with aftertouch, and it also controls legato/non legato articulation and portamento. Left hand has to operate pitch bend wheel and controls for vibrato speed and tone colour. Left foot is on an FC4 pedal controlling bowing, and right foot is on and FC7 controlling dynamics. Complex? You bet it is and way OTT for most people, including many pros! I can do this OK, I'm an organist after all, but I can only play that one melodic line, I don't have any hands or feet left over to do anything else.

Most VSTi's require at least some of this control to sound good, so as far as I'm concerned, it's a non-runner for live play on an arranger keyboard. Super Articulation and especially SA2 voices have gone a long way to recreating what a VSTi does and it's more than enough for the vast majority of players. More importantly, those players, who for the most part are very much amateur players, can handle them. Though I can recall threads about people not being able to use the two SA2 buttons while they play!

So, I'll be interested to discover all the new SA2 and SA voices that have been added this time, along with the ensemble voicing, which promises to be the 'killer feature', perhaps along with Organ World.
It's not what you play, it's not how you play. It's the fact that you're playing that counts.

I agree Andy, that’s how it used to be (And still is for specialist VST like the Stradivari you mention, same as Sax Lab etc.) however all VSTs over the last fair number of years have been adapted for live play as well as studio use.
Have a look at the Konatkt 5 Player (Its free) and you will see that everything SA does can be assigned to operate on any voice of Kontakt, (Plus Kontakt has more articulations available then Yamaha owners can ever dream of) with many voices already having them assigned. The articulation buttons on Yamaha is limited to 2, however VST use keys to achieve this feature and you can assign as many keys as you want so not a problem in that department. (There will always be spare keys that aren’t played by the user in songs)
If set up correctly, apart from the quality of the sound you would not know it wasn’t part of the instrument. (And with simple mixing it can easily fit in with the whole)

Hi Jackoj,
You have to be very careful with these adverts. For a start the Tyros 5- 76 note is no where near the price they are quoting Time you add the carriage you won't save that much. Stick with a dealer you know.
