Using GarageBand for iPad

Postby Brian007 » 07 Sep 2017 12:13

Here's is a quick tutorial for GarageBand on the Ipad, worth a look if only to see what a great app this is

Using GarageBand for iPad Part 1: Drums

A lot of people use arranger keyboards ( and I am one of them ) but there are times when I just cant find a style for the song I need, and creating styles is just to complicated for me anyway. So here is Part 1 about creating a whole song all on your own using Garageband for the Ipad and its not as hard as you may think.

Brian,

I quite like the way he set up a rhythm using the 'Smart Drums'. Getting an increased 'pattern' as he moved each icon to the right would make creating a rhythm fairly straightforward. As for 'playing an actual drumkit' ... ? I am not a drummer and wouldn't have a clue as to which drum to hit when. I had an organist friend (sadly no longer with us) who played in his own band as a youngster, progressing in turn from drums, to guitar, to piano. He would have loved this as he knew in his head exactly the backing he wanted.

Looking forward to the rest of this series of videos.

Hi Hugh,

Heres a video that shows the most basic of drumbeats and while it's played on a full drum kit the basics can be applied to using the drums on the Ipad
The problem for me is with auto-accompaniment on my instrument its so easy just to use that, but I am going to try and have ago with this

Brian,

Thanks for this clip. My youngest granddaughter plays the drums and has been having lessons for quite a while. She can play from a 'music score' as in the clip above, and to be honest, until I saw her doing it I had no idea that drums could be represented like this. To me, the position of the note on the stave gave the pitch of the note (ie. F, or G or A etc.), but for her the position of the note on the stave tells her which percussion instrument to hit. You live and learn!

I will pass the URL of this YouTube video on to her, but I reckon she will tell me that playing drums is a lot more complicated than this. I suppose it's a bit like giving someone a piano lesson and only teaching them how to play the chords of C, F and G. But then, everyone has to start somewhere.

Hi Hugh,

Its just a starter isnt it really as you say teaching someone C.F.G chords and say there you go you have learn to play guitar/piano etc.

Having said that the Beatles didn't do to bad with just three chords ?

Using GarageBand for iPad Part 2: Bass & Guitar

Move forward with this tutorial we move onto the Bass and the Guitar, anyone that has played in a band will know just how important a good bass line is
and the guitar is a great instrument to help fill out the rhythm section of any song of lead part depending on the song. The Ipad has whats called
Smart Instruments which make it really easy to achieve some great guitar effects that are not that easy to reproduce on an arranger keyboard.
