Connecting a Midi Instrument to an Ipad - Part -1

Postby Brian007 » 11 Sep 2017 18:44

To connect a midi device to the Ipad you will need a Camera Connection Kit ( CCK ) as shown in the picture below,
These are readily available but I would advise buying and Apple one as 3rd party ones can stop working unexpectedly after any O.S. upgrades.

If you are lucky enough to have an instrument that supports MIDI over USB ( Your instrument has a USB socket on the back ) thats all you need.

If your instrument has only Midi in and Midi Sockets via 5 pin Din sockets on the back then you will need a MIDI to USB converter as shown below
I bought one off Ebay and it cost me less than £5.00 and works very well

I will do another tutorial later showing how to setup the Midi out of a Tyros to an Ipad

Hi Brian

Yamaha also sell two Blue Tooth adaptors that allows you to connect any instrument with only the 5 pin MIDI Sockets. Lots of APP's are now only using the BT

Hi Fred,

Thats very interesting way to do it, and as you say Yamaha are making big strides in that direction, found this video posted by a user
and it shows the setup and everything else regarding the device, so worth a watch before spending £45.00

For me I like to keep it as simple as I can and a cable for me is about as simple as it can get and works every time.

All the best,

Hi Fred,

Just had a thought the MD-BT01 requires a power source and if you connect via Bluetooth
with a midi keyboard that does not have an external power supply you're snookered
as most Midi keyboards draw the power via the usb connection from the host device.

These would be good for keyboards that have a power supply like the tyros etc...

Hi Brian

I did not think either of the adaptors needed an additional power adaptor. I may be wrong.
